Kids' Wear Export from India — Safety Standards, Certifications and What Buyers Must Verify

Exporting kids' wear from India to EU or UK markets requires specific safety certifications and dye standards. Here is what buyers must check before sourcing.

Kids' wear sourcing carries higher compliance risk than any other garment category. EU and UK markets have specific safety requirements that go beyond standard adult garment certifications — and non-compliance means product recalls, not just returns.

AZO dyes — the first thing to verify

AZO dyes, when broken down, can release carcinogenic aromatic amines. EU regulation REACH and UK equivalent legislation restrict their use in textiles, particularly in children's clothing. Before placing any kids' wear order with an Indian manufacturer, confirm in writing that AZO dyes are not used in production.

Mechanical safety — trims and embellishments

EU Directive 2001/95/EC and the UK General Product Safety Regulations cover mechanical hazards in children's products. Buttons, sequins, beads and decorative trims on kids' garments must pass detachment force testing. A manufacturer producing kids' party wear with embellishments needs to demonstrate awareness of these standards.

GOTS certification for organic kids' wear

Parent purchasing decisions increasingly favour certified organic children's clothing. GOTS-certified organic cotton production is a commercial advantage for kids' wear brands positioning in the premium segment in Europe and the UK.

Size range and grading

International kids' wear buyers need age-banded size grading — not generic S/M/L sizing. Confirm that your manufacturer grades by age bracket and can produce a full size set in sampling before bulk commitment.

Malak Apparels produces kids' casual and party wear using child-safe dyes, GOTS-certified organic cotton options, and age-banded grading from newborn to 14 years, with WRAP and SMETA certification covering social compliance for EU and UK markets.
